Lucy Clout and Marianna Simnett announced as winners of Jerwood/Film and Video Umbrella Awards: What Will They See of Me?
Film and Video Umbrella and Jerwood Charitable Foundation have announced moving-image artists Lucy Clout and Marianna Simnett as the winners of the second edition of the Jerwood/Film and Video Umbrella Awards. Both have been selected to receive commissions of £20,000, to allow them to work on major new moving-image projects. These new works will premiere at Jerwood Space, London and CCA: Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow in 2015.
The winners were selected from a shortlist of four female artists, all of whom were awarded bursaries of £4,000 in 2013 to allow them to develop pilot projects that respond to the curatorial brief and title ‘What Will They See of Me?’. These works by Lucy Clout, Kate Cooper, Anne Haaning and Marianna Simnett are currently on show at Jerwood Space, London, until 27 April, and CCA: Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow, as part of Glasgow International, until 21 April 2014.
On awarding these two new commissions, the selection panel commented:
“All four artists have raised the bar to remarkable heights with the rigour and ambition of their development works. Their distinctive voices and subject matter have resulted in an exhibition which is deep and rich in relation to the theme. For the singularity and pertinence of their proposals, we commended Lucy Clout and Marianna Simnett for the Awards. Their brave, confident grasp of the layers and complexities of their ideas was invigorating. We know we will see much more of Lucy and Marianna, as we will of Anne and Kate. ”
To date, the Awards have endowed funds of £112,000 to support eight of the most exciting new talents to emerge on the contemporary art scene: Ed Atkins, Lucy Clout, Kate Cooper, Anne Haaning, Emma Hart, Naheed Raza, Corin Sworn and Marianna Simnett. Previous winners of the 2012 edition of the Awards: Tomorrow Never Knows, Ed Atkins and Naheed Raza, have gone on to exhibit in solo and group shows and screenings at MoMA PS1, New York; Kunsthalle, Zurich; the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London and Arnolfini, Bristol.
The selection panel for What Will They See of Me? comprised five experts in the field of moving-image: Ed Atkins, artist; Steven Bode, Director of Film and Video Umbrella; Shonagh Manson, Director of Jerwood Charitable Foundation; Francis McKee, Director of CCA: Centre for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow; and Catherine Wood, Curator of Contemporary Art & Performance at Tate Modern.
The University of East London, School of Arts and Digital Industries, is generously supporting the Awards by providing the four artists with access to their wide range of facilities.
